As you know, we've been working on decorating our living room. I've still been looking for art for the living room because the walls are so bare. I've had my eye on these beautiful shadow boxes at Restoration Hardware for a while, but at $90 per shadow box... not in the budget! So it was time to DIY of course :)

How to make Restoration Hardware inspired shadow boxes
I bought some unfinished wood shadow boxes at my local craft store for about $3 each. Excuse the other objects in the picture. I was working on staining multiple projects at a time ;)
I stained them with Minwax "classic grey" stain with a paint brush. I didn't bother to wipe off the excess because the wood absorbed so much. I did about five coats to get the boxes as dark as I wanted them.
Once dry, I gave the boxes a light sanding with a fine grit sandpaper. Then I painted the insides of the boxes with a grey acrylic paint.
Then I used some acrylic paint and a stiff paint brush (I used a stencil brush) to dry brush over the stain. To dry brush, you just barely put any paint on your brush in order to get that streaky look. Love it!
I found these keys at Michael's for $1 each and bought some textured linen paper. You can also find skeleton keys on Amazon and eBay.
Next, I mounted my linen paper with Glue Dots. I love Glue Dots so much! They're easy to use and they work so well!
I painted the keys with Rustoleum Oil Rubbed Bronze spray paint. Just one coat should do the trick.
Last, but not least!! I used hot glue to secure the keys to the paper in the center of each shadow box.
And here they are completed and hung on the wall! Easy and affordable DIY wall art!! :)
SO gorgeous! LOVE how these turned out!!!
